We at North Star host four different driving events throughout the year to help get you out in your Ultimate Driving Machine ranging from social road tours, car handling and safety focused clinics, and as well as hitting the racetracks. Whatever your interests are, if you want to get behind the wheel then you'll have some fun here!
There's no better way to enjoy your "Ultimate Driving Machine" than to get out on the open road. It's even better when you venture out with fellow club members. From May to October the club offers many day-long drives to interesting locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Details vary by drive, but always include entertaining roads, something interesting to see and a delicious meal somewhere along the way.
In the Fall we also offer a three-day weekend getaway. This allows club members a chance to really enjoy each others company and enjoy some excellent scenic drives throughout the upper Midwest. Past destinations include the North Shore of Lake Superior, a drive down the Mississippi to Dubuque, Iowa, a trip through the driftless region of southwest Wisconsin to New Glarus, a quaint Swiss village, and a visit to the Field of Dreams and the Amana Colonies in Iowa.
Drive participants receive a printed map and turn-by-turn directions prior to departure. The group travels together and stops as necessary to refuel, recharge and regroup. There is no cost to register for the drives, but you are responsible for meals, gas and any other expenses along the way. Minnesota summers may be brief, but it is our goal to make the most of it. Watch the club website for more details on the drives being offered this year, or contact North Star Tours Coordinator. email@example.com
A Car Control Clinic is a non-competitive event intended to allow drivers to experience the car control at, and beyond, the limit in a safe, controlled environment. The Car Control Clinic will help you improve your driving skills while learning about car dynamics. Our clinic not only serves to enhance driving skills that are useful in everyday driving situations but also is also used to prepare students for our High Performance Driving Schools. North Star holds Car Control Clinics at the Dakota County Technical College Driver's Training Facility for realistic street and track driving scenarios.
Following a classroom session, students will learn practice braking while turning, inducing rotation, countering oversteer, and other techniques by navigating through a challenging course with one of North Star's driving coaches. The goal is to remove misconceptions, and promote confidence and understanding of what the car and driver are capable of accomplishing, as well as understanding and respect for the limits of car control.
Although this is not a racing school, you will learn to drive your car better at its limits, and increase your ability to brake, corner, accelerate quickly and precisely while maintaining control of your car, all of which are skills that can be life saving in an emergency. We emphasize skills and knowledge to make better drivers on the course, and on the road. Contact North Star Driving Events Coordinator with any questions or to volunteer at these schools. firstname.lastname@example.org
A High Performance Driving Event is intended to allow drivers, with track experience ranging from first timers to amateur racers, to practice car control techniques at high speed on a race track. North Star has traditionally held this event in late spring or early summer at Brainerd International Raceway on the 13 turn competition course. The event includes technical workshops covering theory of vehicle dynamics and car control technique with in-car instruction from one of North Star's driving coaches. Groups are created for on-track sessions based upon the driver's experience to maximize both fun and safety, insuring the best possible learning experience while allowing driver's the freedom to push their cars as far as their skills allow.
Although this is not a racing school, you will learn to push the limits through techniques including effective braking, maximizing tire adhesion and carrying momentum through the corners in order to run consistent, quick laps.
North Star's High Performance Driving Schools are open to all BMW CCA members with all makes and models of cars, excluding most convertibles and Sport Utility Vehicles. Due to the high speed nature of these events, there are several requirements including helmets and a pre-event vehicle technical inspection. Please review the event announcements for additional information.
Attendance of a Car Control Clinic prior to a High Performance Driving School is strongly suggested.

Unlike the other events, North Star partners with the Tire Rack Street Survival program to provide a school targeted towards teenage drivers. The goal of Street Survival goes well beyond mandated drivers training in teaching students to control the car in unpredictable situations based on its handling limits. They master the application of driving physics using their car, learn how to make good driving decisions and react more quickly. They will become more aware and learn how to begin anticipating the actions of other drivers.
North Star hosts several Street Survival schools annually, also at Dakota County Technical College using the very same cadre of driving coaches from our other schools. More information can be found on the Street Survival website.
